Strange questions surface on this loud night in Los Angeles. Tangerines & traffic, trucks, taxis & televisions tousle my brain in this the year of sobriety and straight girlfriends. I’m supposed to be in Las Vegas on a dance floor with hundreds of sweaty shirtless gay men, rocking out to remixes of Bad Romance & Russian Roulette…instead I am writing you this song about inspiration, truth, literature, painting and love…I can’t promise you that all your sins will be remembered, but I will do my best to question the powers that be and my loco-motivation all in the same Q&A. In true Gemini form I will be interviewing myself, sooooo hang onto your hats and glasses because this here is the wildest ride in the Lost Angeles.

Christina: Well Angelina, after following your artistic progress for twenty-seven years (to be exact) I have to ask…you’ve really developed into quite a fascinating young Angelino, but the question at the forefront of my mind, my dear modernista, izzzzzz: is it nobler in the mind to abandon all conventional tools of industry and publicity for the dream, perchance to achieve it, of an actual eternity ripened in true artistic flavor?

Angelina: Yes, it is far nobler to abandon convention in favor of artistic flavor; it may be the only way to achieve any semblance of authentic essence. I’m a rebel, without any particular cause or direction. As an artist, my commitment is to my work, I spend tireless hours locked in my studio making art. I have always opposed tradition, I would much rather fight the recommended current than bear the arrows of compartmentalized fortune. My artwork is an automatically rendered reflection of my life. I go to the gym, read magazines, listen to books on tape, rollerblade with the crazies on the Venice boardwalk & go to Burning Man…aaaand it’s all in there, in each painting: the dark, the light & every shade of black, white and blue that can comprise a product of Los Angeles, such as myself, manufactured in the 80’s.

Christina: Thank you Angelina, now tell us a bit about yourself.

Angelina: I was born & raised in the city of Angels and I currently live and work in Venice, CA. I’ve been an artist my entire life to date. It’s not a choice; it’s a necessity that I constantly endeavor to serve. I’ve attended NYU, the Art Center College of Design, Otis and I graduated from UCLA in 2008 with a BFA. And I have recently completed a massive commission for a prominent musician in his Hollywood Hills home: a post-apocalyptic mural that took up three months of my life and covers EVERY inch of his music studio (ceilings and walls).

Christina: I’d like to know a bit about the two paintings we’ve featured in this article, why are they presented as “manifestos?”

Angelina: These two paintings on the following pages are a representation of my vital beliefs & loves, the things/ideas that I want to remember, the feelings that I cherish, and the truths that my soul and mind hold dear. They are painted collages. ‘Collaborative Manifesto’ is abstract in its collaged sensibility, primarily projecting feelings and emotion. It is meant to be vaguely reminiscent of dreams, fantasy, electricity, movement and hope. ‘Palimpsest Manifesto’ is quite literally a fused collage of people, places, images, ideas, concepts and symbols that have changed the course of my life over the past eight years.

Christina: So, ‘Palimpsest Manifesto’ has been an eight-year project?

Angelina: Yes, it has had many incarnations over the past eight years. As the title suggests, it is a true palimpsest. The Canvas has been painted and repainted, with the faint remains of each previous manifestation dimly informing the current layer upon layer of painted images and words that have culminated to comprise the painting you see before you. I began the initial painting when I was 19, as a representation of a significant dream and the piece developed over the years into a profession of my identity.

Christina: And painting is your chosen medium?

Angelina: Yes, painting is my medium du jour, although photography plays an ever-increasing role in my work and I have a background in film, animation, sculpture and performance. My paintings are primarily large oil paintings with a touch of spray paint.

Christina: Tell us briefly about your process, influences and inspiration.

Angelina: Character, narrative, performance and the American Dream play an increasingly important role in my work. I am constantly on the road and my eyes are always scanning the horizon for colorful characters, bizarre props and obscure romantic locations. It is not unusual, via my wanderlust to stumble across beautiful strangers whom I inevitably wrangle into my artistic adventures.

Christina: What do you hope that your work will do for people? Do you feel that the feedback you receive matches your intentions?

Angelina: My intentions are entirely abstract and all insight is welcome. I hope to inspire a faint tap, tap, tapping in the hearts of my viewers, from which a small, almost imperceptible part of them will inaudibly whisper into the window of their soul “what moves you? What stirs you? What makes you want to open your eyes?” If even one of my viewers reaches the doorstep of these questions, then I have succeeded.

Christina: One final question, Angelina. What in this life can you not live without?

Angelina: That’s easy, love & maybe tangerines.
